Rocky Mountain High

Next morning we decide to drive over the high Rockies. We head out early in the sunshine. Southwest Colorado has some amazing vistas and high mountain peaks.

Well, not the really the highest Rockies.  The route I wanted to take was highway 550 from Durango to Montrose thorugh Ouray, Colorado which would put us on 11,000 ft pass.
We were advised by locals that it is a very windy road so we decided to take the "shortcut" up through Telluride to catch 550 at Ridgeway.
We pass numerous farms along the river valley
Rocky Mountain High!
So up we go highway 145 along the Delores River to Telluride.
Lizard Pass
We rise up to Lizard Pass at 10,237 ft.  We see incredible high mountain vistas. I am shooting all these photos out the window with iPhone while driving.  Shhhush.  Don't tell anyone.

Had it been the fall, we would have been treated to incredible colors of Aspen.  Still the trees were amazing despite not having yet bloomed out.  Past Telluride,  into Rideway.

Stop for some phone calls and check email roadside then keep heading downhill to Montrose.
Before Montrose, we head up another pass to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

We arrive before lunch.  Nice days drive.
